Marijuana Seeds And Cannabis Seeds Information Before Buying

There are many different types of Marijuana seeds available on the market today, each individual seed grows a different plant with its own unique attributes. This can make buying seeds a difficult choice and the decision of where to buy marijuana seeds also complicated. The fact that government regulations and the law have been at war with the cannabis plant for around 100 years, compounds the problem of receiving reliable and credible advice. As the plant has been driven underground, access to information on growing the plant and even where to buy marijuana seeds has been an inherent problem. Couple this with every grower having a different personal technique and a favourite plant to grow or their best marijuana seed the complications of information are compounded.

Even the different words for the finished flowers of the cannabis plant confuse the information and the way we think of the plant. Names such as dope, pot, weed skunk, reefer, ganja, Mary Jane, dak, hoon, grass, buds, wacky backy, draw, bhang, herb, chronic, tea, kush and green are all different words that have had regional popularity at one time or another. Cannabis is the proper name for the plant derived from cannabis seeds, but the term “marijuana” has gained cultural precedence worldwide. The term marijuana was given to cannabis as part of a negative propaganda campaign in the 30s and we should all promote using the term cannabis as this helps to shed the negative connotation surrounding its history and image.

Marijuana seeds – How to buy Marijuana seeds online

We can distinguish between marijuana seed brands and marijuana seed banks. The best marijuana seed banks are a collection, often carefully selected, of the best marijuana seed brands. At Amsterdam Seed Supply we are happy to assist you in making the right choice

With the rise of the internet, there are now many marijuana seed banks, each offering to have the best marijuana seeds. When you buy marijuana seeds online the world is open to what type is available and what you want to get from the plant. So, how do you select which type of cannabis seeds to buy? Start by looking at the space and location where you would like to grow and find any determining factors that this may bring. There is a host of different factors to consider but the main split comes between indoor and outdoor growing.

Marijuana Seeds Factors For Growing

When cultivating indoors it might be important to note the height of your indoor space before you buy marijuana seeds as this can be a key limiting factor. Most marijuana seed banks list the different attributes of the plants in their seed collection, including height. The other consideration is the size of the space, but this usually determines how many plants you will be growing, or how many lamps you will be hanging.

Marijuana seeds are usually listed with their “flowering times” and this is another consideration when growing indoors. When growing normal marijuana seeds (as opposed to automatic) we can choose how long to grow the plant for, by altering the day/night cycle of the plant when we want them to start flowering. The flowering time is decided by the genetics of the plant and is an indication of how long the plant takes to produce ripe flowers that are ready for harvest. Each additional week of “flower time” may encroach upon the number of potential harvests over the course of a year. Also, if new to growing, each additional week may increase the chances for potential problems.(Our FAQ entry How To Cannabis Seeds? has more info on this)

When growing marijuana seeds outdoors, two key factors to consider are the climate of where you will be planting and the latitude. As the term “weed” suggests, cannabis is a fairly hardy plant that enjoys a lot of sunshine, but generally speaking, it is important to choose marijuana seeds with genetics that suit your climatic conditions when growing outdoors. We classify the cannabis plant into Sativa, Indica and Ruderalis groups, but it is important to note that this is not a hard classification, as most marijuana seeds available are a hybrid between these and may have attributes from each side.

Marijuana Seeds and Genetics

Sativa plants are more suited to tropical or high humidity countries and have growth patterns to match these conditions, being smaller leaf and bud set with a tendency to flower on plant mass rather than light cycle, meaning they are often tall. Indica plants suit mountainous and dry regions with a faster reaction to changes in the light cycle and bigger leaves and bud set.

The other, more recent, hybrid incorporates genetics known as “Ruderalis”. These genetic traits are very different from both Sativa and Indica marijuana seeds as they originate in the very far north. They have developed themselves to flower “automatically” and independently of the light hours around them. This is a truly amazing phenomenon that separates growing outdoors from the usual annual cycle. In some regions then it may be possible plant and harvest automatic marijuana seeds up to 4 or 5 times a year. (Our FAQ entry What Does Autoflowering Cannabis Seeds Mean? has more info on this)

The multitude of marijuana seeds for sale are invariably a hybrid of Sativa and indica classifications, so we talk in very general terms of these types. One of the earliest crosses between these two genetic groups produced what is known as skunk seeds today. Skunk was named for the very potent smells that were produced from the flowering plant and incorporates strong traits from both classifications.

Selecting the marijuana genetics that suits your outdoor climate is important. Related to this consideration are the latitude of the location you will be planting and the season changes of that locality. In most parts of the world, it is possible to 'grow' a large cannabis plant. However, the flowering cycle and the “finishing” of these flowers can be thought of like the ripening of a fruit. Consequently, in some areas, the light hours decrease rapidly at the end of the season, making it difficult to bring the flowers to full maturity. If you couple this sharp drop off with high humidity or rain, the results at the end of a season can be very disheartening. Watching your precious, well-loved flowers disintegrate with mould from even one day to the next can be heartbreaking for even a seasoned grower.

Marijuana Seeds - Grow Space and Genetics

Conversely if planted outdoors at the equator, or tropical countries, marijuana seeds may begin to flower almost as early as they sprout. As the equator sees an even amount of light hours throughout the year, it may be that you need to provide additional light hours to grow the plant and hold them from flowering immediately. For these areas, Sativas are a good choice of marijuana seed as they primarily use plant mass as a key indicator for starting their flowering cycle.(Our FAQ entry What Are The Differences Between Indica And Sativa? has more info on this.)

Although it is important to consider these genetic variables in relation to your growing space and conditions, it is important not to get too focused on the exact details of individual cannabis strains. Within any packet of marijuana seeds, there is likely to be some difference in traits and this is to be embraced. It is from these slight genetic differences that we can breed and change humanity's marijuana seed collection and get such a large range of flavours, colours shapes and sizes. When we buy marijuana seeds we are never sure if this packet will contain the most flavourful or potent example of the genetic cross on the packet. The genetic freak may come out of any seed germinated, whether good or bad. We should feel we can take the details on the side of a packet as a 'general rule of thumb' when we order marijuana seeds.

The way to avoid genetic differences and, indeed capitalise on the vast array of traits that are on offer is through A-Sexual propagation rather than growing from marijuana seeds. Cannabis is relatively easy to clone provided you provide it with the right conditions for root growth. Cuttings can be made of your favourite cannabis plant through the growth phase and at the beginning of the flowering stage. By keeping a genetic example of your best marijuana seeds in the growth phase, you can ensure that the traits and differences exhibited by the full ripening of the flowers can be replicated time and time again. This is the way that the genetics of most marijuana seeds are worked with and tinkered through time, as once you have harvested a plant grown from seed, it’s unique genetic makeup may be difficult to find again without an exact genetic copy. (Our FAQ entry What Is A Clone? has more info on this)

Marijuana seeds - Feminized, Regular and Autoflowering

Feminised marijuana seeds are also a relatively new development in the industry. Cannabis is naturally dioecious meaning that it has two different genders. Actually, originally cannabis plants are hermaphroditic, meaning they had both male and female flowers on one plant. Through human’s extensive history with cannabis, we have selected the best marijuana seeds to plant for each of the multitudes of uses we want to gain from the plant. Keeping the strongest seed stock or selecting only the marijuana seeds from the plants exhibiting the certain traits we were looking to continue in next year's crop. Through this selective breeding over time, humanity has developed very distinct and different types of cannabis plants grown from the particular marijuana seeds we plant. One of the traits that humans have selected at this time is a separation of gender between plants. From selecting the best marijuana seeds to provide more female flowers, while simultaneously selecting the plants that have more male flowers humans managed to successfully separate the sex of individual seeds in an otherwise hermaphroditic plant.

The separation of sex between male and female cannabis plants from hermaphrodite is an accomplishment and success over time that dramatically accelerated our selection process further. By having marijuana seeds that produce only male and only female plants humans were able to intensify breeding programs through careful selection, giving rise to the huge range of different marijuana seeds to choose from today. By bringing together plants that exhibit the traits we are looking for from the female side and pairing them with traits required from the male, humans are able to increase the production and potency of the plants grown from marijuana seeds today.

Marijuana Seeds - The best kind of Cannabis seeds to grow

This is also a reason we have such incredibly different plants grown within the same plant species. Hemp is a Cannabis Sativa plant grown from Marijuana seeds selected for their fibre and other industrially useful properties. The best Marijuana seeds have then been further selected between hemp plants for industrial seed production and those for fibre and other uses.

Alternatively, the best Marijuana seeds selected for their flowering properties and THC production have also been the work of countless generations.

In the end, when you buy marijuana seeds it really is a personal choice of what you want to get from your experience with the cannabis plant. More frequently today the benefits of human’s physical interaction with cannabis are becoming more understood. Individual marijuana seed strains are being linked to helping more for certain physical conditions and so another layer of choices could be factored into the decision making process. In these choices, the advice we like to give is to try and find the particular strain that works for the individual. It used to be a simple case of smoke Sativa if you want to be active and smoke Indica if you want to be sleepy. But when you buy marijuana seeds these days there is such a subtlety of choice available, it is easy to get bogged down in the details.
